Data Science in Education: Transforming Curriculum and Administration
by Tara Linney, M.S.
As an educator with an M.S. in Instruction, as well as a recent M.S. in Data Science, I have developed a keen interest in exploring the transformative potential of data science in education. Over the past decade, data science has emerged as a powerful tool that can revolutionize the way we approach teaching, learning, and educational administration.
In this article, I will delve into the applications of data science in education, highlighting its impact on curriculum development and day-to-day administrative tasks.
Curriculum Development
Data science enables educators to analyze vast amounts of student data to gain insights into learning patterns, strengths, and weaknesses. This information can then be used to tailor curriculum and instruction to individual student needs. By leveraging data science techniques such as machine learning and predictive analytics, educators can identify students at risk of falling behind and provide targeted interventions to help them succeed.
Specific curricular areas that we teach our students also have a direct link to data science. A big part of data science focuses on data organization and data visualizations. It’s not just about what the data says, it’s also about how we can get others to “see” the patterns in the data. When we have our students create tables and graphs to organize and show their data for various class activities, we’re exposing them to concepts that are of great importance in the world of data science.

Day-to-Day Administrative Uses
Beyond curriculum development, data science also has numerous applications in day-to-day educational administration. For example, data science can be used to optimize school transportation routes, improve student attendance, and allocate resources more effectively.
By analyzing historical data on student transportation patterns, administrators can create more efficient routes that minimize travel time and reduce transportation costs. Additionally, data science can be used to improve student attendance by identifying patterns of absenteeism and developing interventions to address the root causes. Resource allocation can also be optimized by analyzing data on student needs and program effectiveness.
